Skype CEO steps down

Sunday 7 October 2007 @ 4:12 pm

skype_logo Skype was acquired by Ebay in late 2005 for $2.6 billion. Till recently, Skype CEO also co-founder Niklas Zennstrom will step down. However, he will still become non-executive chairman of the board of directors.

This is clearly that Ebay is unhappy with the revenue performance of Skype. The expected revenue is $1.7 billion, but Skype could hardly meet the target and settled for just $530 million. It is just 1/3 of the total amount.

Currently, Skype have 220 million registered users, it has steadily grown 94 percent compared to the same quarter in 2006.

Reduce your Site Loading Speed with CSS

Sunday 7 October 2007 @ 1:16 am

Previously I mentioned that, you could reduce your site speed by cut down the size of CSS. Now, there is a better way to compress your CSS further down and it save your time by uncomment everything. It uses the PHP method to do the job.

First, create a new file called .htaccess in the same directory with your CSS files.

<Files style.css>
SetHandler application/x-httpd-php
</Files>

Ads on YouTube and Orkut

Saturday 6 October 2007 @ 11:09 pm

On Google, we can offer see contextual around the search results. We know Google major earning is from advertisements. Recently even YouTube, there is 10 seconds video ads comes in. Although, when Google first acquired YouTube, we have expected this day will come.

But what surprise us more is Google pulled all the Adsense ads from Orkut. What this mean? Does this mean social networking site failed to deliver expected returns? Or maybe we should analyze the background of Orkut. The major users of Orkut are from Brazil and India, but in US, Orkut is not a big player like FaceBook.

Like Orkut, I think Google should not impose ads on YouTube either. That makes video sharing terrible.

Reduce Your Site Loading Speed

Monday 24 September 2007 @ 10:56 pm

Most of the bloggers adopt their blogs theme from Internet, but for web designers. You not only create a web site with astonishing graphics but also you need to consider the loading speed. A study shows that more than half of the visitors will your site, if it takes them more than 5 seconds to load. When it takes more than 10 seconds, I think at most 10% of the visitors will still have the patience.

So, the direct affect to your loading speed not only your server speed, also your web site size. You not only try to cut down the graphics using a higher compression like JPEG with lower quality. I mainly used 80% quality reserved; this will effectively reduce more than 50% of my picture size.

On the programming portion, you could also try to find a better algorithm on your php coding. On CSS files, you could cut some of the additional size by reducing excessive comments, e.g. using /* comments */ instead of using few paragraphs of comments. You also can save couples of lines by using 1 lines, e.g. margin: 0px 10px instead of separate them into margin-left, margin-right and etc.
