Graphic Card is better in cracking password than CPU

By Korabi On October 28, 2007 View Comments

Nowadays, the requirement for PC games is getting higher and higher, this also causes the processing power of the graphic cards getting much higher. Russian hackers have found their ways to crack password using the GPU processing power!

The Russians have created a unique technique by using the same parallel processing idea for brute force attacks. The processing power of Nvidia 8800 is 25 times faster than a CPU when using it for such task. That is also why GPU is more appropriate than CPU in processing such task.

So, thanks for Russians, you have found a new role for your graphic cards!

Western Digital: 3TB HDD in 2010

1TB hard disk is still very rare on the market. If not wrong, there are only Hitachi and Western Digital selling it in the market. Not long ago, Hitachi expected to release 4TB hard drive in 2011, which is 4 years from now. On last week, Western Digital announced that they have successfully increased the storage density by storing 520 gigabits per square inch.

The density of today is around 200GB per square inch. So, this technology is almost double of the today’s density. Western Digital also promises to have 3TB hard disk by 2010. So, we now can expect maybe every year will gain one more TB extra hard disk in the market.

SATA Hard Disk Stage Rack

How many hard disks do you have? Normal desktop most likely to has only 4 hard disks, unless you have a raid card. Here is a cool hard disk docking station, where you can mount or hard disk just slot in and it works. It look like a iPod docking which the other end connected to USB.

So, you just plug in either your 2.5″ or 3.5″ SATA HDD, it will automatically detect like an external HDD. This really saves you lot trouble to dismantle your desktop and take out your HDD and replace it with another one. This cool device works on Windows and Apple Mac. It costs for $39.70.

I wonder does it works on Linux too.

Nokia Internet Tablet Hot Deal: $239

Nokia N800 is an internet tablet where you can online whenever you are as long as there is WiFi. The retail price of N800 is $399 and now it has gone down to $279 weeks ago on Amazon. Now it has gone even lower for just $239 on buy.com, you could even have a $10 discount if you use Google checkout.

What I like N800 the most is the open source, it runs on Linux and currently with the open source of Maemo Hildon Linux. There are even more software you could find and install onto the device.

For next year, there will be a WiMax version N800 out. I think by that time would be the best time to get one. Since WiMax would cover even wider range up to few miles and you no need to anymore look for WiFi hotspot.

  1. Your electricity bill will surely be half of your current one if you are using over hundred watts cpu.
  2. You do not need to have a loud fan, with such lower power consumption, the heat released will be proportionally lower too.
For the new these new series of 45-watts CPU, the price

Intel aims to bring down power bills for Linux users

By Korabi On September 25, 2007 View Comments

A new web site called LessWatts.org was launched by Intel. This is to help Linux users to cut down their power bills and maximize the power savings. But is Intel so generous want to help you to reduce your Linux desktop powered by AMD? Nope, they said they only support Intel-based platform.

However, this is not the first time Intel has tried to help Linux users cut their power bills. In last May, Intel also had launched the PowerTOP program that monitors individual processes to keep track of power consumption. So, how is AMD going? Hope to see AMD also put effort on similar power saving programmes.

There are serveral cold tricks you might want to try on your Linux desktop and share the results with us.

How to Make a Solar-Powered DS Lite

By Korabi On May 6, 2007 View Comments

Guys at Tom’s hardware have built a solar powered DS Lite!

    Here are all the ingredients:

    • Nintendo DS Lite: $129.99
    • Soldius 1 solar power charger: approximately $99.99
    • Mario Kart DS: $34.99
    • Metroid Prime: Hunters DS: $34.99
    • Metal latch, glue, spray paint and other accessories: $20
    • Total: $319.96

How it Works: We concocted the solar DS Lite with the goal of having it run entirely on solar power, and we succeeded. The Soldius 1 solar power charger originally offered an output of 5.6V in direct sunlight; however, after Max made modifications to the panel, he was forced to removed the device’s circuitry so that the DS battery cable could connect directly to the solar panels. That led to the output dropping to approximately 4.0V. But it hardly mattered, since the DS Lite’s battery supplies 3.7V. So we were able to play the Solar DS outside continuous on nothing but solar energy. Unfortunately, the power would cut out when heavy clouds passed overhead and obscured the sun. The sensible thing to do was put the battery back into the DS and use the solar panels to charge the device. This process takes less than two hours to fully charge the Solar DS, which isn’t bad at all. And it doesn’t cost you a cent on your electric bill.

    AMD Quad FX System Reviews

By Korabi On December 1, 2006 View Comments

AMD has released the new quad core processor. The current price for a pair of FX-70 is $599, FX-72 is $799 and FX-74 is $999. Found that there is one whole list of hardware reviews from various sites have been carried out on the AMD latest Quad FX System. Good or bad? See it yourself.

I would said AMD still need to develop much harder to further the gap between Intel. But after acquire Nvidia, maybe AMD does have the advantages of bringing in more special and leading features than their opponents. Let us see what AMD can do on next year new processor architecture.
