Software Review – Golden FTP Server

By Korabi On June 30, 2007 View Comments

During my university time staying in the school hostel, one of the most common method people sharing files across local network is using FTP. The reason people use FTP as a bridge for file exchanging is because the stability, control rights and secure connections.

From my experience, having right FTP server software is an important to both novice and professional users. FTP server with feature to limit the speed, cache and users to access is a main factor to protect your hard disk and server life span.

I would like to recommend Golden FTP Server. It is a simple interface and light weight FTP server software to set up and simply execute it without any pain even for users with basic computer skill. The features provided are yet powerful. It has all the basic functions suppose to be on every FTP server, from password protection, numbers of users downloading and uploading and speed limitation and etc. Also, it supports multi-threaded downloads, this brings convenient to users to resume aborted downloads.

40% of Electricity Waste on Shut Off Devices

By Korabi On June 25, 2007 View Comments

Came across this article on The NY Times showing that while home electronics are turned off, they consumed 40% more electricity than when it is on. A testing shows that when the DVD player was using 27 Watts in idle mode, but it used up 47 Watts when shutting down. This is a great amount of wastage! So next time, maybe you want to consider to put your electronic devices into standby mode rather than completely shut it off.

The journalist also mentioned a free useful software to help on power saving. It is Co2 Saver. It gives users a control panel to specify the exact time to turn off monitors and disk drives and properly put the machine to sleep compare to Windows XP and Vista Sleep method.

How to Effectively Attract Web Traffic?

By Korabi On June 24, 2007 View Comments

If you do not want to spend money to let others to do a review your site but you still want to earn traffic linking from their site. Then the simplest way to get high traffic from other web sites is by participating and commenting on their sites.

However, there is shortcoming on the commenting system on bloggers’ site, there is a rel=”nofollow” on the link. This stops Google’s spider bot from crawling to your site. This is to prevent comment spammers from advertising their web site rather than really interested on commenting on your blog.

Google Starts Pay Per Action

By Korabi On June 22, 2007 View Comments

From the orignal Pay-Per-Click, now Google has finally launched its Pay Per Action beta on Google Adwords for advertisers. Advertisers are able to define action to be completed on their site before publishers to get their pay. Such action as purchase, signs up for a newsletter, or completes any other clearly defined action. So, compare to the current Pay-Per-Click model, of course publishers expect to earn more from it.

So, does it make publishers to earn more or less? In my opinion, I think for smaller sites pay per click is surely still be the main stream of earning, but for large site with plenty of traffic flow, pay per action will surely give their income a boost. However, I’m pessimistic that the price for pay per click will drop lower, since advertisers all hope to gain more genuine clicks from visitors.

Although currently the advertising model is still in beta but according to Google:

Starting today, advertisers in the beta will see an alert in their AdWords account informing them that they can now create pay-per-action campaigns. Going forward, advertisers who have enabled AdWords conversion tracking and received more than 500 conversions from their CPC and CPM-based campaigns in the past 30 days will be automatically added to the beta on a rolling basis.

Redirection

By Korabi On June 21, 2007 View Comments

It has been quite a slow update for this site. The main reason behind of this is because I have been very busy with my day work as a software engineer. The work tasks are never able to finish, one after one. On the other hand, because I’m focusing on another Chinese blog site. But the result is getting worse, since monetize just on text link advertisement is barely hard to survive for a Chinese blog.

So for a wiser plan is to have my effort to put on the English site and let it grow. While meantime reduce my attention on the Chinese blog. So my initial target is usd1/day, then usd10/day and then usd100/day… haha…

[Malaysia Rapper] Ipoh Mali

By Korabi On June 17, 2007 View Comments

I found this Malaysia rapper MTV from Youtube. He is really talented. And now more and more unknown singers are using youtube as a platform to showoff their singing skills.

A successful example is earlier, Justin Timberlake has signed a Youtube star – Esmee Denters, who have been gaining her popularity after her first exposure on Youtube.

Very often we listen to Malaysia rap, there is always local “Manglish” style. Nice song.
